Miguel Angel Pla

Miguel Angel Pla

Miguel was one of the first teachers from Argentina to visit our area, and has regularly returned many times for 10 years.
We have been fortunate to have his influence and insights, without which Tango would have not expanded throughout our island communities.

BIOGRAPHY:
Miguel Angel Pla is a Master of Argentina's true Salon style Tango.

An M.D. by profession, Miguel began his in depth study of Tango in 1990. As Tango began to envelop more and more of his time, his medical practice began to take a back seat to his career in tango. By 1993 Miguel was the first place winner of the Tango '93 Competition, the Trofeo Gloria y Eduardo, and the Certamen Hugo del Carril, all held in Buenos Aires. He performed with the Orquestra del Tango de Buenos Aires from 1994 to 1996, an honour bestowed upon few. In 1996 Miguel took a role in Alan Parker's movie, Evita.

His passion for tango then changed when he discovered his love of sharing the dance with others, which finds him traveling regularly to tango communities throughout North America and Europe. For Miguel, Argentine Tango is an art form and a culture expressed in the context of a social dance.

Words from MigueL:

"The Tango is synonymous with Buenos Aires in the same ways that Jazz and New Orleans are. It is indicative of our music, our culture, our subculture. It is fundamental to our identity. The Tango is the ultimate communication between two people. It begins with an embrace, an initial sharing of affection, yet stresses individual balance. The mastering of one's individual balance is what allows two bodies to dance as one, along with a technique that is clean and uncluttered, a form that is pure, a line that is classical, and an elegance that is sublime".
